Deposit Sales & Service Manager Receives MDBA Volunteer of the Year Award

Melinda Elwell, Wolverine Bank Downtown Midland Deposit Sales and Service Manager.

Melinda Elwell
Deposit Sales & Service Manager

July 2010: Wolverine Bank's downtown Midland Deposit Sales and Service Manager, Melinda Elwell was honored on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 by the Midland Downtown Business Association (MDBA) as the recipient of the 2010 Volunteer of the Year Award.

In September 2008, Melinda Elwell joined Wolverine Bank as the Deposit Sales and Service Manager for its downtown Midland office. She is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the branch and helping to serve customers. But to those that know Melinda, she is much more than an employee of Wolverine Bank. She is a friendly face that visitors to Wolverine Bank’s downtown office look forward to seeing – a “customer favorite” some would say.

Her willingness and enthusiasm to help make community events, as well as downtown Midland businesses successful is demonstrated by her involvement in the community; whether it be serving as Secretary for the Midland Downtown Business Association, helping with downtown business participation with Farmer’s Market or participating in events throughout the year with the Downtown Development Authority.

Melinda is originally from Duluth, Minnesota. She graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Consumer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2001. She has an extensive background in Retail and Retail Management. She is married to husband Tim, has a 4-year old daughter, Ailah and is expecting a second daughter in November.

Wolverine Bank - Sharing Important Lessons with Local Students

St. Brigid's Life Skills Class

May 2010: In today’s world of banking, high NSF fees and corporate greed are what get the headlines. Instead of that norm, right in our own back yard, this local bank just won’t buy into that. Wolverine Bank takes a small step toward not reducing NSF fees but teaching our next generation how to avoid them altogether.

Wolverine Bank has teamed up with St. Brigid Catholic School to bring a financial literacy program to Mrs. Deanna Gambrell’s Life Skills class.   Deanne Marszalkowski, Marketing Specialist at Wolverine Bank, and Deposit Managers, Nick Lyons and Julia Jodoin taught the course.  The bankers visited the class for two weeks, three days each week, teaching the seventh and eighth graders topics such as budgeting, check writing and the basics of economics.

The students were full of energy and had the constant enthusiasm that is expected of 13 year olds, asking questions such as “do the ATM’s print the money?” and “how does the money from a checking account get to your bank when someone writes a check?”  The course answered those questions and many more.

The students were challenged with games and rewarded with small prizes.  The last day of the course each student received a certificate of completion and celebrated the completion of the course with ice cream.

In today’s world when most of us feel like we could use more guidance in our own financial matters Wolverine Bank is trying to give a leg up to the next generation.  Arming the students with real world experiences.  Preparing them to make the tough choices that will come with adulthood.   Engaging them in conversations about financial matters.  Sharing with them a piece of the banking world that isn’t so scary.  The end result is to give true life skills to those that will be heading up the workforce in less than ten years.

Wolverine Bank Recognized as 2010 "Companies That Care" Recipient.

April 2010: Rich Weiler recognizes organizations who demonstrate their commitment to strengthening our community by their support of United Way.
“Companies That Care” are not only characterized by the financial commitment they and their employees make, but their impact through community advocacy and volunteerism. They serve as the foundation for real change and continue the strong legacy of compassion for those in need.

Some that were recognized have long supported the mission of United Way, while others are fairly new to the family. Some are large corporations, while others are small family-run businesses or area non-profits. The common thread that runs throughout each of this year’s honorees is the promise to be an integral part of our future.

Beyond their commitment to successful employee and corporate campaigns, these organizations and their employees serve as campaign volunteers, loaned executives, Leadership Circle members, Young Leaders, and community volunteers. They sponsor local events, and find innovative ways to help reach out and engage our community.
